Dragon, a Hinckley 38, finished the 1999 Caribbean 1500 from Hampton, Virginia to Virgin Gorda. John Neal's Boats to Consider for Ocean Cruising rates the Hinckley 30-64 range 3 of 5. His note: "Very attractive with classic lines, highest quality construction. Modest tankage and storage, shortish waterlines."

Overview

The Hinckley 38 is a Sparkman & Stephens design (S&S #1903) built by Henry R. Hinckley & Co. from 1968 to 1970, with 28 built.

Design and Construction

A fiberglass masthead sloop, 37.5 ft overall on a 27.5 ft waterline, with 10.5 ft of beam and 5.67 ft of draft. Displacement is 13,920 lb with 6,000 lb of lead ballast, a ballast ratio of 43 percent. The rudder hangs on a skeg behind a fin keel. The hulls were molded by Hughes Boatworks in Canada, and Hinckley built the decks and did the finish work.

Buyers Notes

John Neal rates the Hinckley range 3 of 5: classic lines and top construction quality, but modest tankage and storage and shortish waterlines. Only 28 were built, so expect a small, aging pool of boats; survey the hull-to-deck work on a boat finished from Canadian hulls.
