Overview
The Beneteau 50 is a Bruce Farr design with an interior by Armel Briand, built by Beneteau in France from 1995 to 2004. About 200 were built, many for charter as the Stardust 505 and the Moorings 503, 504 and 505.
Design and Construction
It has a fin keel with a cast iron bulb, with a shoal keel as an option, and a spade rudder. sailboatdata.com lists 50.75 ft overall on a 45.42 ft waterline, 14.67 ft of beam and 7.55 ft of draft with the deep keel. Displacement is 28,660 lb with 9,315 lb of ballast, and the masthead sloop carries about 1,027 sq ft.
Buyers Notes
Check which keel a boat has and how hard it worked in charter. Neal’s caution about groundings applies (see Known Issues).
Wikipedia describes the hull as solid fiberglass with a balsa-cored deck, a walk-through reverse transom with a swimming platform, and an internally mounted spade rudder controlled by dual wheels. The keel is a fixed fin with a weighted bulb, with a shoal-draft option. Interiors were built with three to five cabins, sleeping six to ten, and the charter fleets sold the boat as the Stardust 505 and the Moorings 503, 504 and 505 depending on the layout.
