John Neal's Boats to Consider for Ocean Cruising lists the Gozzard 44, rated 3 of 5: 'Good design and quality construction. Totally committed quality company.' Its capsize screen value is 1.85.

Overview

The Gozzard 44 is a Ted Gozzard cutter built by Gozzard Yachts (North Castle Marine) in Ontario, launched in 1993. His son Michael Gozzard produced a Mk2 from 2001.

Design and Construction

The boat has a clipper bow and bowsprit, a modified fin keel with a cutaway forefoot, and a skeg-hung rudder. sailboatdata.com lists 50 ft overall including the bowsprit, a 37.25 ft waterline, 14 ft of beam and 5.25 ft of draft. Displacement is 28,000 lb with 11,700 lb of ballast, and the cutter carries about 1,152 sq ft. The Mk2 drew 5 ft 6 in against the Mk1’s 5 ft 3 in, with a new keel and rudder that cut wetted surface and improved pointing.

Buyers Notes

John Neal rates it 3 of 5 and calls it a good design from a committed quality builder. Check whether a boat is a Mk1 or Mk2, since the underbody differs.

Known Issues

Bobstay fitting when moored from the bowspritmoderatePassageBoats editorial

Responding to a Gozzard 44 MkII owner, Practical Sailor recommends confirming that the bobstay fitting is designed for extreme side loads before using it to moor.

Inspection: Inspect the bobstay fitting and its attachment at the stem; do not lead a mooring pennant to it unless it is built for side loads.

Balsa-cored hull and enclosed interiormoderatePassageBoats editorial

Good Old Boat's 1999 factory visit describes Gozzard hulls cored with end-grain balsa, and interiors installed before the deck goes on, which makes later repairs difficult and cramped.

Inspection: Have the surveyor moisture-meter the hull around through-hulls and below-waterline fittings, and the deck around hardware; ask how any past repair was accessed.

discusses

Unlike the aft-cockpit Gozzard 44, which has a Jack-and-Jill head arrangement, this center-cockpit version has only one head, though it is large, with ample counter space and storage.
