Overview
The Hylas 49 is a center-cockpit cutter built by Queen Long Marine in Taiwan for Hylas Yachts from 1992. It developed the Sparkman & Stephens Hylas 47, itself the former Stevens 47, into a longer boat with a sugar-scoop transom, a redesigned deck and three staterooms. The design traces to the Stevens Custom 47: Cruising World reports that Stevens Yachts built 56 of them at Queen Long in the early 1980s before selling the molds to the yard, which went on to build the boat as the Hylas 47 and later the Hylas 49.
Design and Construction
The underbody is a fin keel with a skeg-hung rudder. Displacement is about 32,000 lb with 14,500 lb of ballast, a ballast ratio of about 45 percent, on a 39 ft 6 in waterline.
Under Sail
The cutter rig carries about 1,250 sq ft. No independent sea trial of the 49 was found.
Buyers Notes
Neal notes that newer Hylas boats have substantially better quality and fewer deck leaks, so check deck hardware and ports carefully on early hulls.
