Overview
The Swan 47 is a Sparkman & Stephens design from Nautor’s Swan in Finland, built from 1975 to 1984, with 70 built according to sailboatdata.com. Its place in this catalog rests on its ocean racing record: 4 different boats of the design have finished the Pacific Cup from San Francisco to Hawaii or the Newport Bermuda Race in the official results.
Design and Construction
sailboatdata.com lists the underbody as fin with rudder on skeg, 47.83 ft overall on a 36.24 ft waterline, with 13.76 ft of beam and 7.8 ft of draft. Displacement is about 32,400 lb with 15,500 lb of ballast, and the masthead sloop carries about 1,059 sq ft. Wikipedia describes the hull as having a raked stem and a raised counter reverse transom, with a wheel-steered skeg-mounted rudder and a swept fin keel. The masthead rig has a keel-stepped mast, two sets of unswept spreaders and aluminum spars with discontinuous stainless steel rod rigging. The centreboard Swan 47-2 followed in 1976 as a development of this design.
