John Neal's Boats to Consider for Ocean Cruising lists the Allied 39, rated 1 of 5: 'Functional, practical but truly ancient and likely not cost effective to refit.' Its capsize screen value is 1.64. No named passage is on file yet.

Overview

The Allied 39 is a fiberglass sloop built by Allied Boat Company in Catskill, New York, from 1970 to 1973, credited to George Owens and Robert Harris. Few were built, and it should not be confused with Allied’s better-known Mistress 39 ketch.

Design and Construction

sailboatdata.com lists a fin keel with a skeg-hung rudder, 39.83 ft overall on a 28.83 ft waterline, 10.5 ft of beam and 5.92 ft of draft. Displacement is 17,000 lb with 6,700 lb of ballast, and the masthead sloop carries about 680 sq ft.

Buyers Notes

John Neal rates it 1 of 5 and calls it truly ancient. Any boat left is now more than 50 years old, so the survey and the refit list matter more than the design.

Known Issues

Age and refit costmoderatePassageBoats editorial

Neal judges the boats too old to be worth a full refit.

Inspection: Price a candidate on its survey and on the refit it actually needs, not on the design.
