Overview
The Catalina 445 is a Gerry Douglas design from Catalina Yachts in the United States, built from 2009.
Design and Construction
sailboatdata.com lists a fin keel with a bulb and a spade rudder, 44.42 ft overall on a 38.33 ft waterline, 13.58 ft of beam and 6.92 ft of draft. Displacement is 23,500 lb with 7,200 lb of ballast, and the fractional sloop carries about 856 sq ft. A structural fiberglass grid spreads loads from the rig, keel and engine into the hull, and the keel is lead.
Under Sail
Practical Sailor’s tester saw 3.5 knots to windward in 5 knots of true wind and over 6 knots on a broad reach later in the day. Under power the boat cruised at 6.5 knots at 2,100 rpm. The dual wheels give almost no feedback from the rudder, the instruments sit at knee level below the wheel, and the sheets lead to the companionway, so a singlehander must leave the helm to trim.
Buyers Notes
John Neal rates post-2000 Catalinas 3 of 5: good value and adequate for low to mid-latitude cruising, but not for high latitudes.
