Overview
The Salona 44 is a J&J Design performance cruiser from Salona Yachts in Croatia, built from 2011.
Design and Construction
sailboatdata.com lists a fin keel with a bulb and a spade rudder, 44.29 ft overall on a 39.89 ft waterline, 13.75 ft of beam and 8.37 ft of draft. Displacement is 20,944 lb with 7,496 lb of ballast, and the fractional sloop carries about 999 sq ft. SAIL’s Peter Nielsen describes the hull as vinylester resin infused into triaxial cloth over a PVC foam core above the waterline, laid up in a split mold, with the deck glued and through-bolted to the hull flange. A stainless steel frame is laminated into the hull abaft the main bulkhead, and the mast step, chainplates and keel attach to it. Resin infusion made the 44 half a ton lighter than the Salona 45 it was derived from.
Ocean Racing Record
Last Tango (Phillip King) finished the Sydney Hobart Yacht Race in 2011, 2013 and 2015. Anger Management (Tim Stewart) finished the Sydney Hobart Yacht Race in 2018 and 2019.
Buyers Notes
Its capsize screen value of 2.00 sits at the usual offshore guideline. Check which keel a boat has: the 8.37 ft figure is the deep racing keel, and Cruising World lists a standard keel drawing 6 ft 11 in.
In 10 to 12 knots on Biscayne Bay, SAIL’s reviewer found her helm balanced and the boat making an easy 7 knots hard on the wind, with 8 in the puffs. She tacked through a little over 80 degrees with the short keel. The recessed furling drum allows a deck-sweeping genoa, which has to be skirted after each tack, and he suggested a shorter-luffed headsail with a higher clew for cruising. Tankage is 58 gallons of fuel and 84 of water, saloon headroom is 6 ft 6 in, and the standard layout has three cabins.
