Buyers Notes

John Neal rates C&N boats 2 of 5: very seaworthy, but prone to serious blistering in warm water (see Known Issues). The centerboard and its pennant and trunk need inspection on a boat this age.

discusses

The owners describe their 1996 Nicholson 58 as designed by David Pedrick, but a special one-off. They say it was customized and fitted out by Moody for an owner in Southampton and given the deck saloon, which makes the layout unusual.

The owners say that although things needed changing and updating, everything about the boat was sea ready, and that she is "built like a tank" with a thick fiberglass hull. They paid 125,000 UK pounds, which they call a pretty good deal after seeing another for sale at half a million, and they were able to swap boats with the seller so they did not have to sell their own.

discusses⚙ engine

In the engine room the owners point to a 135 horsepower Perkins main engine and a 75 horsepower Perkins generator. A hydraulic system for the bow thruster and windlass runs off the engine. The engine room is a proper walk-in space with good access, and they have added a water maker, wind generator, solar panels and an inverter.

warns

The owners say the cockpit is the weak point, with no comfortable places to sit because of the narrow hull and a very high coaming at right angles to the seats. You cannot make beds out there. They add that it is completely safe in heavy weather and that they took only one wave over the stern on the Atlantic crossing.

The owners call her fast and easy to sail. On a beam reach in 20 to 25 knots she does between 9 and 11 knots, and downwind on the Atlantic crossing they hit 16.8 knots surfing. They say she cuts through waves with a lot of momentum and little bottom slap, unlike their previous French production boat. Raising the nearly 20 m mast's mainsail is the hard work.
