Elizabeth, a Hinckley 49, finished the 2000 Caribbean 1500 from Hampton, Virginia to Virgin Gorda. John Neal's Boats to Consider for Ocean Cruising rates the Hinckley 30-64 range 3 of 5. His note: "Very attractive with classic lines, highest quality construction. Modest tankage and storage, shortish waterlines."

Overview

The Hinckley 49 is an H. Hinckley keel-centerboard ketch, first built in 1971, with 23 built. It appeared in the Yachting designs section in 1973.

Design and Construction

A fiberglass masthead ketch, 49 ft overall on a 40.42 ft waterline, with 13.42 ft of beam. Draft is 5.67 ft with the board up and 10 ft with it down. Displacement is 38,000 lb with 8,000 lb of lead ballast, a ballast ratio of 21 percent, and about 922 sq ft of sail.

Buyers Notes

John Neal rates the Hinckley range 3 of 5 for classic lines and top construction, with modest tankage and storage. The low ballast ratio and modest sail area for 38,000 lb mean this ketch will be slow in light air; the shoal board-up draft opens up shallow anchorages.
