Overview
The Sydney 38 is an Australian racer-cruiser from Sydney Yachts, built from 1999, with 65 built according to sailboatdata.com. Its place in this catalog rests on its ocean racing record: 46 different boats of the design have finished ocean races in the official results (Pacific Cup, Sydney Hobart).
Design and Construction
sailboatdata.com lists the underbody as fin with bulb and spade rudder, 38.5 ft overall on a 35.27 ft waterline, with 12.33 ft of beam and 8.67 ft of draft. Displacement is about 12,260 lb with 4,255 lb of ballast, and the fractional sloop carries about 842 sq ft. Sailing World’s reviewer reports that the hull is vinylester and E-glass over a balsa core, with a PVC foam-cored deck, and that an internal one-piece fiberglass grid incorporating the keel, mast, engine and rudder supports and stiffens the hull. The spade rudder has sealed bearings and the wheel is recessed in a large cockpit. The forepeak is used for sail storage and holds a ventilated head.
