Overview
The LM 30 is a Danish motorsailer designed by Bent Juul Andersen and built by LM Glasfiber from 1977 to 1990, with 311 completed. Some have an inside steering position.
Design and Construction
sailboatdata.com lists a fin keel with a skeg-hung rudder, 31.83 ft overall on a 26.25 ft waterline, 10 ft of beam and 4.9 ft of draft. It displaces 11,000 lb and the masthead sloop carries a modest 361 sq ft, in keeping with a boat built to motor as well as sail. Yachtsnet’s archive notes that the boat was designed to be easy to handle, with all lines led back to the well protected cockpit. The engine, usually a Bukh or Volvo, sits in a separate moulded GRP box that forms a watertight bulkhead around it, with a second soundproofed lid, which gives an unusually quiet installation. The wheel linkage can be disconnected completely so the boat can be steered by the cockpit tiller with no added friction.
Buyers Notes
John Neal rates it 2 of 5 and calls it a well-built, impressive pocket cruiser. Some boats were built with twin bilge keels, so check which keel a boat has.
After the Danish yard stopped, the moulds went to England and production continued as the Scanyachts LM30 and later the LM32. Yachtsnet quotes Practical Boat Owner’s 1986 review as calling her faultless as a sailing boat and completely obedient under power, able to manoeuvre with very little way and unaffected by wind direction.
