John Neal's Boats to Consider for Ocean Cruising lists the Rustler 37, rated 4 of 5: 'Totally impressive, high-quality boats and excellent company.' Yachting Monthly found her solid with a very relaxed motion in waves, aimed at couples who spend long periods aboard.

Overview

The Rustler 37 is a Stephen Jones design built in Falmouth by Rustler Yachts from 2014, a smaller sister to the Rustler 42 and successor to the Rustler 36. It is aimed at couples cruising long distances shorthanded.

Design and Construction

The lead keel is fully encapsulated and the rudder hangs on a skeg. Displacement is about 19,500 lb with 7,000 lb of ballast, heavy for a modern 37-footer. The interior joinery is hand-finished, with every radius smooth and rounded. Yachting World’s preview describes the design as promising a low centre of gravity under an easily managed cutter sailplan, with a forward sail locker. The first boat’s layout was built around comfortable sailing for a couple, with a comparatively large forward cabin.

Under Sail

Yachting Monthly’s tester found her solid on the water with a very relaxed motion in waves. She is slow to accelerate in gusts but carries her way, leaning and holding her course. The steering is light at about one and three quarter turns lock to lock, with some feedback through the wheel. Yachting Monthly’s tester expected the interior to be dark and gloomy without the many hull ports and windows common on newer boats, and found it was not.

Buyers Notes

The aft cabin is small and dark, the heads cramped for showering, and there is no bathing platform. The price is high for the size.

discusses

The presenter tours a Rustler 37 specified by its owner: synthetic teak decks instead of the usual real teak, an electric furling headsail with a plain genoa, side fold-down boarding ladders, and Yanmar engine controls at the helm.

The presenter calls the 37 the successor to the Rustler 36 and "really just a scaled down Rustler 42". The base price is given as 575,000 plus VAT, and the builder customizes to order, with a US dealer in Berthon.

The presenter describes the Stephen Jones design as keeping traditional seaworthy features: a deep cockpit, a rig with parallel spreaders, an encapsulated keel that puts the tanks low and central, and a skeg-hung rudder, with a counter stern, spoon bow and low freeboard.

discusses

Below, the presenter praises the volume for a 37-footer: a sail locker forward pushes the berth headboard back, and there is a dedicated chart table with a deep chart drawer, a heated wet-weather locker beside the engine room, and a galley with places to wedge yourself. He says fiddles and handrails throughout make it "a very safe boat at sea".

recommends

After a sail in 18 to 25 knots with swell in Cornish waters, the presenter says the cockpit stayed dry all the way, the helm and main sheet winch are easy to reach, and the boat keeps a consistent, pleasant motion through the seas. He calls it a boat that "will really look after you".

discusses

The Sailing Today presenter calls the Rustler 37 a Stephen Jones design that looks a bit retro and comes from an older school of design than most modern yachts. He notes she is much narrower, with a longer keel and a skeg-hung rudder that should keep her stable in tough conditions.

recommends

The presenter says this is a boat that would adapt well to serious blue water cruising. In 10 knots of breeze she really wants 15 to get going nicely but still handles beautifully. He likes the fit-out, with lots of exposed wood, a large chart table and a traditional galley across two cabins.
