Overview
The Hinckley Pilot 35 is a Sparkman & Stephens design (S&S #1727) built in fiberglass by Henry R. Hinckley & Co. from 1962 to 1975, with 117 built. It is the third generation of the Pilot, after a wooden S&S Pilot first built in 1956.
Design and Construction
A long-keel masthead sloop, 35.75 ft overall on a 25 ft waterline, with 9.5 ft of beam and 5 ft of draft. Displacement is 13,700 lb with 4,600 lb of lead ballast, a ballast ratio of 34 percent, and standard sail area is about 550 sq ft. Some boats were built as yawls, a tall rig was offered, and five custom boats carried a raised doghouse. About a dozen more were built under license in South America for the Chilean Navy. A 35 hp Westerbeke diesel was the listed engine.
Buyers Notes
John Neal rates the Hinckley range 3 of 5: classic lines, the highest quality construction, but modest tankage and storage and shortish waterlines. With a 25 ft waterline and a heavy long keel it is slow in light air, and the large production run makes it one of the easier Hinckleys to find.
