Overview
The J/105 is a Rod Johnstone sloop from J/Boats, built from 1995 according to sailboatdata.com. Its place in this catalog rests on its ocean racing record: 6 different boats of the design have finished the Pacific Cup from San Francisco to Hawaii or the Newport Bermuda Race in the official results.
Design and Construction
sailboatdata.com lists the underbody as fin with bulb and spade rudder, 34.5 ft overall on a 29.5 ft waterline, with 11 ft of beam and 6.5 ft of draft. Displacement is about 7,750 lb with 3,400 lb of ballast, and the fractional sloop carries about 577 sq ft. Practical Sailor reports the hull and deck are built by TPI in Rhode Island with the SCRIMP infusion process and cored with Baltek end-grain balsa. On early boats the deck core was not removed where the chainplates pass through, and some cores became waterlogged; later boats use solid glass there. The reviewer lists headroom of only 5 ft 4 in in the saloon as the most vexing problem for many people, and notes that the standard freshwater tank is a portable 5 gallons. The auxiliary is a Yanmar 2GM20F, and some owners report it moves on its soft mounts enough to make dripless shaft seals leak.
