Atom Voyages' list of good old boats for offshore cruising includes the Liberty 28, describing a very heavily built double-ended full-keel cutter, expensive and heavy. No named passage is on file yet.

Overview

The Liberty 28 is a Joe Fennell double-ended cutter built by Liberty Yachts from 1978, with about 70 built. It is a very heavy boat for its length.

Design and Construction

Displacement is 12,000 lb on a 28 ft hull with a 24 ft 4 in waterline, with about 4,800 lb of ballast in a full keel that draws 4 ft. The rudder hangs on the transom, and the cutter rig sets from a bowsprit. Headroom is about 6 ft 2 in.

Under Sail

The cutter carries about 515 sq ft, generous for the size, which helps move the weight.

Buyers Notes

Atom notes these are expensive and heavy for a 28-footer.
