Overview
The Victoria 30 is a Chuck Paine canoe-sterned cutter, the Morris Leigh 30 built under license and sold in the UK by Victoria Marine from the 1980s; about 50 were built. It grew from Paine’s Frances 26.
Design and Construction
The keel is a long, encapsulated keel with lead ballast and a square-bottomed rudder hung on it. The hull is solid GRP laid to Lloyd’s specification with a balsa-cored deck and plywood pads under fittings. Yachting Monthly gives the limit of positive stability as 163 degrees.
Under Sail
On test she made about 5 knots close-reaching in force 3 to 4 and close to 6 knots bearing away, tacked through less than 90 degrees, and was well balanced and very stiff.
Buyers Notes
See Known Issues for the deck and chainplates. The canoe stern makes the stern gland, gearbox and rudder post awkward to reach and leaves no transom for a boarding ladder. Most boats have Yanmar 2GM20 engines, which the surveyor rates as reliable.
