Overview
The Carter 33 is a Dick Carter design, built by Olympic Yachts in Greece and by other yards, built from 1971, with 200 completed. Good Old Boat’s review of the Dick Carter biography says the Greek production at Olympic Yachts covered the Carter 33, 37 and 39, after which Carter assembled a marketing team called Carter Offshore.
Design and Construction
sailboatdata.com lists a fin keel with a skeg-hung rudder, 32.58 ft overall on a 23.33 ft waterline, 11 ft of beam and 5.5 ft of draft. Displacement is 7,500 lb with 2,860 lb of ballast, and the masthead sloop carries about 405 sq ft.
Ocean Racing Record
Firetel (R.Lawler & K.Taylor) finished the Sydney Hobart Yacht Race in 1982, 1983, 1985, 1986, 1988, 1991 and 1994. Ghost Too (G.D.Ford) finished the Sydney Hobart Yacht Race in 1979, 1981 and 1983. Wrinkles (B Story) finished the Sydney Hobart Yacht Race in 1981 and 1987.
Buyers Notes
Its capsize screen value of 2.25 is above the usual offshore guideline, typical of a beamy IOR-era design; the rubric still rates it proven because several named boats have finished the Sydney Hobart.
