John Neal's Boats to Consider for Ocean Cruising lists the Nicholson 38, rated 2 of 5: 'Famous yard, long out of business. Very seaworthy but watch for consistent serious blister problems on all models once in warm waters.' The Nicholson 38 owners' association credits hull 26, Mauna Kea, as the first to complete a circumnavigation, in the early 1970s; no dated record of that voyage is on file. Its capsize screen value is 1.67.

Overview

The Nicholson 38 is a ketch motorsailer that Camper & Nicholsons designed in 1965 by reworking John Alden’s Mistral, lengthening it and raising the freeboard. The first was shown at the 1966 London Boat Show, and hull numbers reached 134, the last completed by its owner in 1978. Halmatic moulded the hulls and nearly all were finished by C&N at Gosport.

Design and Construction

sailboatdata.com lists a long keel, 37.83 ft overall on a 27 ft waterline, 10.5 ft of beam and 5.17 ft of draft. It displaces 15,904 lb, and the masthead ketch carries about 662 sq ft. The owners’ association notes that hull 26, Mauna Kea, was the first to complete a circumnavigation, in the early 1970s.

Buyers Notes

The owners’ association advises checking the bronze rudder stock where it bonds into the fiberglass blade, since it can work loose. Neal warns of blistering on boats kept in warm water (see Known Issues). Ten hulls were finished by their owners, so confirm who completed a given boat.

The presenter calls the Camper and Nicholson 38 "a nice strong fiberglass boat" and says the builders made them "really thick and solid" in that era, and that he prefers the older fiberglass boats. Down below he says "it's quiet" and feels like a wooden boat.

The broker, introducing a 1972 ketch lying in Faro, says Camper & Nicholson has a very good reputation for worldwide cruising and that the 38 was one of the best models they ever made. He says only about 140 were built (broker's sales claim). The boat has no black water storage but there is room under the floorboards to fit a tank.

Engine and electrical as described by the broker: a Perkins 4108 with a range of about 350 miles at 5 knots and consumption of about 3 liters an hour, with two alternators (55 amp and 90 amp) alongside solar and wind charging. He says the engine room lifts up for access and that the boat has been used for the last 12 years by the same couple (broker's sales description).
