Golden Globe Race
2018 & 2022 editions - boat models, entry counts, and finish rates
The Golden Globe Race (GGR) is a solo, non-stop, around-the-world race following the original 1968 Sunday Times Golden Globe route. It is unique among offshore races in prohibiting GPS, autopilot, chart plotters, and all modern electronic navigation. Competitors sail on sextant, wind vane self-steering, and paper charts only.
All boats must comply with strict GGR class rules: pre-1988 designs, full or modified full keel, keel-hung rudder, heavy displacement, and minimum waterline length. Any boat approved by the GGR organisation has been independently certified as capable of a solo non-stop circumnavigation, the most demanding offshore passage standard in recreational sailing.
The data below covers the two completed editions: 2018 GGR (started Les Sables-d'Olonne, France, July 2018) and 2022 GGR (started Les Sables-d'Olonne, September 2022). Outcome classifications are sourced from the race's official skipper records. The 2026 GGR is in the entry phase and has not yet started.
Entries & Finishes by Boat Model
2018 + 2022 combined · sorted by total entries
Note: "Out" includes withdrew before start, DNS, early retirement, and rescue cases where the skipper did not complete the circumnavigation under their own sail. "Finished" reflects race-official classification (entrant / Chichester Trophy). Year assignment places skippers in their first-entry edition - skippers who entered both 2018 and 2022 appear only once. See data caveats below.

Data Notes
- Year assignment is based on which edition tab a skipper appears under on the official GGR website, which reflects their first entry year. Skippers who entered both 2018 and 2022 (e.g. Abhilash Tomy, Mark Sinclair) appear once, grouped by their first entry, with outcome reflecting their best result across editions.
- Abhilash Tomy (Rustler 36, Bayanat) was rescued in the 2018 race after a knockdown south of Australia, but returned in 2022 and completed the circumnavigation. The "Finished" classification reflects his 2022 outcome.
- Tapio Lehtinen (Gaia 36, Asteria) completed the 2018 GGR in last place after 392 days, arriving after the prize-giving but completing the circumnavigation. His classification on the GGR site registers as "out" due to timing rules; his voyage was nonetheless a legitimate solo non-stop circumnavigation.
- Mark Sinclair (Lello 34, Coconut) won the 2022 Chichester Trophy; he appears in the "2018" listing tab as an original 2018 entrant whose race was deferred to 2022.
- "Withdrew / Did Not Start" includes pre-race withdrawals, early-race abandonments (before the Cape of Good Hope), and cases where a skipper's boat was not ready or they were disqualified before the start.
